10 Movies From 2012 That Didn't Get Enough Respect

7. John Dies At The End

John Dies At The End I'm not sure how to describe this film. Let's start with weird. This is a weird movie. There's no ifs or buts about it, from the title, to the production design, to the story - John Dies At The End is, if nothing else, unconventional. There's a couple of reasons this is on my list. None are less significant than director Don Coscarelli. He's a master of weird. Starting with Phantasm in the late 70's, he has forged a career that never went mainstream or conventional, but one that earned him a lot of respect. For example, during his promotional work for Cinderella Man, Paul Giamatti cited him as the one director he was eager to work with. His most recent work before 'John Dies...' was Bubba H0-Tep, 10 years earlier. He directed a very good episode of Masters of Horror in between, but I'm discounting that for this list. By the way, did I mention you need to see Bubba H0-Tep, it's fantastic. So if I was to sum up 'John Dies...' it would take another 2 paragraphs, so allow me to rip from IMDB, the official synopsis:'A new street drug that sends its users across time and dimensions has one drawback: some people return as no longer human. Can two college dropouts save humankind from this silent, otherworldly invasion?' It's original, dark, and nailed-on as a future cult classic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vy83MPk7Wpg
