6. Holy Motors
So, Holy Motors, where to start? Admittedly, I love strange movies. The works of David Lynch and early David Cronenberg movies are among my all time favourites. I was expecting something strange, with a surreal plot going into Holy Motors. Only now I realize it may the strangest movie of all time. It has very little plot, it's seems to be segmented into little mini-stories that each tell their own tale, and combine in the same broader universe. I'm unfamiliar with the other works of director Leos Carax, but this film was magnificent. I must say, if you are willing to suspend all disbelief, and go on the journey this movie takes you, I find it hard to imagine somebody not liking Holy Motors. It may be nonsensical, but it seems to be Carax celebrating cinema itself. He references many movies, shows all of the things movies can do for us. The plot, and I use the word 'plot' very loosely: We follow a day in the life of Monsieur Oscar. He rides around all day and night in a limousine, dressing up in various guises and performing different 'acts', the reason for which never becomes abundantly clear. I haven't done Holy Motors justice here, I don't think anybody can with words. If you are willing to give it a chance, seek this movie out (and give it a chance at least until the fantastic musical interlude in the middle). Next time when you want to call a movie 'weird', think of Holy Motors first. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWu9WjEcdbk
