10 Movies From 2018 That Were Completely Pointless
6. A Wrinkle In Time
A Wrinkle in Time had the potential to be the breakout family hit of early 2018, but sadly the movie's execution couldn't match its undoubted ambition. From a commercial standpoint it fared much better in the United States than it did internationally, but Ava DuVernay's first foray into big-budget filmmaking will nonetheless go down as one of the year's biggest box office bombs.
It may have squeaked past $100m at the domestic box office and will probably find a new lease of life as a cult favorite in years to come, but the movie tanked internationally and is rumored to have lost Disney upwards of $90m.
Despite some stunning visuals and great performances from the cast (with young lead Storm Reid a particular standout), A Wrinkle in Time just didn't connect with audiences the way that Disney had hoped, with mixed reviews generating more of a 'meh' than a 'must-see' response from audiences.
Ultimately, A Wrinkle in Time was simply lost in the shuffle. Caught in the wake of the Black Panther juggernaut, fellow blockbuster prospects Tomb Raider, Pacific Rim: Uprising and Ready Player One all hit multiplexes soon after, with DuVernay's earnest fantasy dropping out of the domestic top ten entirely in just four weeks.
