10 Movies From 2018 That Were Completely Pointless
5. Pacific Rim: Uprising
If there is one lesson to be learned form Pacific Rim: Uprising, it is this; John Boyega is a bona fide movie star.
Surrounded by two-dimensional characters, banal dialogue and all of the familiar plot points found in virtually every studio-mandated sequel, Boyega's charisma and screen presence are the highlight of the movie, which says a lot when the entire appeal of the franchise is supposed to be 'giant monsters fighting giant robots'.
Uprising is sorely missing the stylistic flourishes of Guillermo Del Toro, with the follow-up as bland and uninspired as you would expect from a project that was essentially green-lit solely to appeal to Chinese audiences, where the first Pacific Rim was a huge hit.
While that may sound cynical, over 25% of Pacific Rim's global box office came from that market and in the wake of scathing reviews usually reserved for the superficially-similar Transformers franchise, Uprising vastly under-performed everywhere when compared to its predecessor, with China now accounting for almost 35% of the movie's worldwide earnings.
Out of the domestic top ten in just three weeks, Pacific Rim: Uprising is what happens when a big-budget movie is designed as a commercial enterprise and nothing else. People would struggle to tell you anything about it four minutes after they left the theater, never mind four months later.
