10 Movies From Cannes 2021 We're Hyped To See
5. The Worst Person In The World
This Norweigan rom com (of sorts) from intriguingly versatile director Joachim Trier has picked up some of the hottest hype from this year’s festival, with star Renate Reinsve picking up Cannes’ award for Best Actress. It’s an honest and unflinching look at modern romance and the fear that grips just about anyone as they reach the end of their 20s, a movie that tackles well trodden themes and plots but imbue them with a new lease of life.
This is Reinsve’s film from start to finish, and the young actress’ performance has been plied with praise from critics which made her eventual awards triumph a no-brainer. This could be a star making turn for the performer, who has worked with Trier before and embraces the moral quandaries of a character who, far from the titular terrible individual, is nonetheless complicated and layered.
While Norweigan cinema tends not to permeate the English speaking world to a great deal, The Worst Person In The World has received such stunning notices and is so accessible that it could wind up making a splash, in its original form or - sadly, more likely - as a remake.
