10 Movies From Cannes 2021 We're Hyped To See
3. Memoria
Here’s a film to tickle the fancy of any self respecting critic. Directed by Thai maestro Apichatpong Weerasethakul (whose Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives won the top prize at Cannes 2010), Memoria stars living legend Tilda Swinton and is the kind of stately, thoughtful piece that the intelligentsia will claim to have adored even if they didn’t actually bother seeing it.
Reviews have advised caution to those without an affinity for the arthouse - this is a slow paced and deeply meditative picture, though by no means a straightforward drama. The experimental Weerasekathul is a man for the big themes, and intersperses long takes and heavy duty thespian work from Swinton with sci fi elements.
The picture stars Swinton as an English woman living in Colombia who starts to unravel after hearing a series of unexplained sonic booms. From this simple premise, Weerasekathul takes us into a journey examining what it is to be human, or at the very least presents a seriously impressive film from some of world cinema’s finest artists.
