10 Movies That Gave Rise To Bizarrely Specific Fears

2. Cornfields - Children Of The Corn

Watching Children of the Corn is a bit like the chicken-or-egg argument. Have cornfields always been creepy, and these types of films just capitalize on that fear, or did cornfields used to be completely innocuous, and sick minds like Stephen King have just perverted them into something terrifying? The world may never know. Regardless, you can't un-watch a movie like Children of the Corn, and no matter how hard you try, you can't become un-creeped out while driving through Kansas or Nebraska. There's something inherently unsettling about the remote expanses of nothing but cornstalks for miles on end. To say nothing of the fiercely religious, homicidal children inevitably lurking among them. The fear is understandable, if not entirely rational. It's a combination of being totally alone and isolated, with the fear of the unknown. After all, cornstalks can grow taller than a person -- you have no idea what could be hiding in there. No, the only reasonable thing to do is to plan your long distance drives so that you carefully avoid rural areas in general. It might be a little more time-consuming, but you'll be happy when you're not being used as a human sacrifice for a group of pint-sized zealots.
