10 Movies That Gave Rise To Bizarrely Specific Fears

3. Getting Hobbled - Misery

Misery is a horrifying experience on so many different levels. It's the story of a die hard fanatic who finds her favorite author badly injured after a car accident, and decides to take him home and nurse him back to health. In other words, every Tumblr user's ultimate fantasy. But as he begins to heal, she has to come up with new ways to him by her side, since funnily enough, he isn't content spending the rest of his life trapped in a creepy cottage in the middle of nowhere. And that's where the really horrific part comes in: she hobbles him. She ties him down to the bed, puts a block of wood between his ankles, and smashes them with a sledgehammer, breaking those fragile little bones into tiny pieces. If he can't walk, he can't escape, right? Anyone who has seen Misery harbors a secret fear of being hobbled, if only because James Caan does such a brilliant job of selling the horror, dread, and fear as he realizes what she's about to do. This is, however, one of those rare occasions when we should be grateful they made a change from the source material -- in the book, she chops off his foot with an ax and cauterizes the stump with a blowtorch. Yikes.
