10 Movies That Gave Rise To Bizarrely Specific Fears

9. Being Murdered In The Shower - Psycho

If you watched Psycho and didn't develop a crippling fear of being murdered whilst in the shower, well then, you have the heart of a lion. Most of us established a totally healthy procedure of inching our way into the bathroom, turning on the light, and flinging open the shower curtain, just to be safe. Showering became an Olympic speed event to see how fast you could get it over with. Sometimes you didn't even close the curtain. The bathroom in general became a very scary place. And here's why. In Psycho, Marion Crane was our protagonist, the person that the entire film was supposed to be about. That is, of course, until she was viciously murdered less than halfway into the film. Her death wrong-footed audiences and created a general sense of unease -- if Marion could get killed in her own film, none of us were safe. In addition, there's something especially unsettling about being attacked while we're naked in the shower, at our most vulnerable. Murder is one thing -- being stabbed to death while water is dripping in your eyes and you're desperately trying to find something to grab onto or fight back with is something else entirely.
