10 Movies Heroes You Didn't Realise Were Probably Psychopaths

5. Benjamin Gates - National Treasure

I hate to beat up on Nicolas Cage (kind of), but I felt compelled to include his portrayal of Benjamin Gates in the National Treasure movies, focusing primarily on the first one. When Gates was a young boy, his grandfather told him of a secret treasure that was collected by the freemasons and how the last living mason imparted a final clue to Ben's ancestor. We learn that the Gates family has been chasing this clue for hundreds of years, earning them ridicule for believing in conspiracy theories. But Ben grows up to become a quick-witted historian who is bent on fulfilling his family's mission, despite the protests from... well, his family. Why He's A Psychopath: This guy is in his 30s, and has spent the majority of his life fixated on just one clue that no one else before him could fully figure out. Yes, he is ultimately validated, but anyone else watching this from the outside had to have noticed that Ben was foregoing real relationships, an abundance of resources we don't even know about, and a life that relies on more than just kooky stories his grandfather told him in an attic. Oh, and the guy steals the Declaration of Independence. It takes a real sociopath to believe that's a good idea, but thanks to this being a Disney movie, he walks away as a free man.
