10 Movies That Might All Be In The Character's Head

8. Taxi Driver

It's one of the greatest films of all time, from one of cinema's greatest directors, but the ending of Taxi Driver has confused just about everyone who's ever watched it. Because rather like Minority Report, it really doesn't seem right for the hero to escape the horrors of the world around him with a happy ending. Unlike Minority Report though, Martin Scorsese actually gives the film a final ten minutes that could suggest a dream sequence; Travis sustains gunshot wounds, runs out of bullets before he can kill himself, and waits for the police to arrive. What if he didn't actually run out of bullets, though? The idea that Travis escapes to see Betsy again has been one that many critics have questioned, but it certainly makes sense for Travis to live out a fantasy of being a hero, in his final breaths. Scorsese however notes that the ending, of Travis staring at something we can't actually see, suggests he could revert to the angry, reckless "ticking time-bomb" we know. Both De Niro and Scorsese have teased a sequel over the years; maybe Travis is a good man that imagined everything up to the ending, and the final shot that implies the rage within him is the starting point for the next film. Now that's a plot twist.
