10 Movies That Might All Be In The Character's Head

6. The Dark Knight Rises

It's fitting that Alfred should predict the end of The Dark Knight Rises when he tells Bruce, "I had this fantasy, that I would look across the tables and I'd see you there, with a wife and maybe a couple of kids. You wouldn't say anything to me, nor me to you. But we'd both know that you'd made it, that you were happy. I never wanted you to come back to Gotham." Alfred only ever wanted the best for Bruce, but when he is presumed dead, it seems like Alfred will never have this moment. Until the final moments of the movie of course, in which Alfred, back at the Florentine cafe, glances over and sees Wayne, with Selina Kyle. But there's a key word in Alfred's speech that you might have picked up on: "fantasy". What if this final encounter with Wayne is nothing more than a dream? The idea that Bruce Wayne is still alive and has given up protecting Gotham, could just be the dream of a grief-stricken old man who's lost the closest thing he had to a son. It's a lovely ending; it's a shame if it wasn't real, and certainly a sad twist.
