10 Movies Nobody Really Enjoyed Making
7. Caligula (1979)
Despite being retrospectively regarded as a bit of a cult classic, 1979's Caligula was a mess to make from start to finish. Production was funded by men's magazine Penthouse, with various 'Penthoue Pets' being cast as extras in various scenes throughout the film.
Bob Guccione, founder of Penthouse, set out to make Caligula as a porn film with a big budget and genuine story, but screenwriter Gore Vidal and director Tinto Brass had very different ideas of how to make the movie.
Vidal wrote a screenplay but Guccione criticised it for containing too much homosexual content. Brass wasn't happy either, and the pair decided to kick Vidal out of the film altogether after some angry disputes. However, Brass and Guccione couldn't agree on certain key issues either, with the director flat out refusing to film the unsimulated sex scenes demanded by the producer.
Brass wasn't allowed to edit the film and left the project, disowning it altogether. Meanwhile, Guccione had secretly snuck back onto the sets with his Penthouse Pets to shoot some hardcore sex scenes and add them into the final cut. Many of the actors who appeared in the film have since revealed their regrets about the whole thing and some view it as a shameful mark on their CVs.
