10 Movies Nobody Really Enjoyed Making
6. Super Mario Bros (1993)
There are plenty of bad video game movies out there, but Super Mario Bros. is widely-regarded as one of the worst. An intensely troubled production process ensured that the film was doomed from the start, but the final product was so bad that Nintendo has almost never even acknowledged its existence and prefers to distance itself from the project whenever possible.
The film went through several directors, and many actors were offered starring roles. Astonishing as it might sound, Tom Hanks was considered for the part of Luigi, and Arnold Schwarzenegger was also linked with the project at one time. In the end, Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo were cast in the roles of Mario and Luigi, respectively.
Hoskins later called the movie "the worst thing I ever did", saying if he could go back in time and change any part of his life, he'd stop himself appearing in that film. Dennis Hopper, who played King Koopa (Bowser), called the experience a "nightmare", criticising the "control freak" directing partnership of Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel.
The film ended up over budget, broke deadlines, and went through countless changes over the course of a long production period. The end result was a bunch of angry actors and a nonsensical, almost surreal interpretation of a classic video game series.
