11 Movies Nominated For Tons Of Oscars (That Somehow Didn't Win Any)

1. The Color Purple

While Turning Point's treatment was a shock, The Color Purple's shutout was a more surprising. Though he had yet to win a Best Director Oscar, by the 1986 Oscars Steven Spielberg was already an Academy darling with his previous movies winning a combined thirteen Oscars. Plus, this adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel about the difficulties faced by African American women in the early 20th century was unlike anything Spielberg had directed in the past. Though The Color Purple was wildly acclaimed by critics and audiences and was expected to be an Oscar favourite, the big winner of the 1986 Oscars was another literary adaptation, Out of Africa, which won seven Oscars. Surprisingly, Spielberg wasn't even nominated for the Best Director Oscar despite winning the Directors Guild of America Award for Best Director. It remains a mystery why such an acclaimed film didn't win a single Oscar, especially since a number of other films that won Oscars that year €“ Prizzi's Honor, Cocoon, and The Trip to Bountiful €“ aren't as memorable. Spielberg would later get his Oscar for Saving Private Ryan, and The Color Purple star Whoopi Goldberg would get hers for Ghost. Several others, like producers Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Quincy Jones (who was also nominated for Original Song and Score), are still waiting. Why do you think these and other films nominated for Oscars were shutout? Let us know your thoughts below.
