10 Movies That Were About Nothing More Than Dirty Old Perverts

7. The Comfort Of Strangers (1990)

Colin and Mary are an average couple on holiday. They can't find a restaurant one night and they bump into Robert - a wealthy half English/half Italian man who takes them to a tavern and regales them with stories of his diplomat father and the cruelties his sisters perpetrated against him as a boy. They get through several bottles of wine and Colin and Mary wake up hungover the next day. They are accosted by Robert who insists they come to stay and dine at his place. They meet Robert's wife Caroline. Colin and Mary decide to marry when they get home and they are half attracted to and half repulsed by Robert and Caroline. Robert soon shows his pervert side in an ending that is deeply shocking and depraved. Every line Robert speaks in the film is loaded with menace - yes, Christopher Walken can do Dirty Old Pervert. He has been stalking Colin and Mary from the beginning of the holiday, irresistibly drawn to Colin's beauty, and drawing them into his monstrous web. It is evident that he beats his wife up - could be physical or sexual violence, perhaps both. She seems to be a meek little lamb but appearances can be deceptive.. Robert is a man driven by maniacal desire to control and inflict pain - one of the worst variants of pervert. We get a taster of the grim finale when Robert and Colin are walking down a hall and Colin makes a remark that displeases Robert. Robert swiftly punches him in the gut and winks at Colin who says nothing! Directed by Paul Schrader and with a script by Harold Pinter, the film proves the old maxim true - do not talk to strangers. Ever.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
