4. The Wind Doesnt Blow It Sucks
Stanley Kubricks critically acclaimed Vietnam movie from 1987 is famous almost entirely for the basic training section at the beginning, featuring career best performances from R. Lee Ermey and Vincent DOnofrio. Of course, neither actor appears in the remainder of the film for obvious reasons, leaving it to Matthew Modine to anchor the actual Vietnam section of the movie. Modine is by no means bad in this film hes just not the powerhouse his co-stars were, and their absence leaves the remainder of the film without the intensity of its first act, which is problematic for a war movie: it shouldnt lose traction when it actually heads off to war. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TNhS81w4bM Worse, the film tries to show the harrowing effects of war on the male psyche without actually making an ethical or moral point, leading to a muddled feeling throughout the parts of the film based in Vietnam, as if Kubrick doesnt know quite why hes taken us there. He clearly did: the visionary perfectionist did nothing without a reason. Its just not immediately obvious from watching, and after the stunning effect of the first act, the rest of Full Metal Jacket just kind of tails off
