10 Movies Rated Fresh On Rotten Tomatoes That Would Be Rotten If Released Today

8. Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

The Phantom Menace is one movie that for this list I don't have to suppose on - it actually saw its critical consensus flip.

In 1999, Episode I was met with cautious optimism, but it didn't take long for disappointment to set in. Usually this would have minimal impact on the Tomatometer score, which is defined by the release period. However, in one of his final mad-cap decisions as the head of Lucasfilm, ol' George decided to rerelease the film in 3D (with the plans to give the others the same treatment down the line), allowing critics a second chance to submit their thoughts on the movie, which were shockingly a little more intense thirteen years on. The result was a shift from 63% to 55%, making it the only proper Star Wars movie to be rated Rotten.

While some may think that's a just outcome, it's rather misrepresentative of the movie's initial reaction; anyone looking at Rotten Tomatoes would assume it was hated on release, which is far from the truth.

There is an argument here that the simple presence of Star Wars' name on something on it automatically predisposes people to liking it, thus meaning Episode I would still be looked on favourably, but you need only see The Clone Wars (18%) to show that isn't true.
