10 Movies Ruined By Fan Overhype

7. The Matrix Revolutions

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Warner Bros.

The Matrix Reloaded may have left some fans disappointed as a follow-up to the iconic original, but it still delivered the groundbreaking, effects-driven action sequences fans expected, and functioned just fine as the bridging middle chapter of the trilogy.

Even with fans' expectations somewhat lowered for threequel The Matrix Revolutions, there was still a lot of excitement that it would round out Neo's (Keanu Reeves) story in gratifying, eye-popping fashion.

Yet the Wachowskis clearly weren't interested in delivering a strictly crowd-pleasing finale, as Revolutions instead got bogged down with noodle-baking philosophy and video game-y action sequences, before signing off with an inconclusive, elliptical ending that left many fans absolutely infuriated.

All of the Matrix sequels, including the recent The Matrix Resurrections, have struggled to escape the long shadow cast by the original, which was such a landmark piece of action cinema that it was near-impossible for any follow-up to fully live up to it.

In the case of Revolutions, it also probably didn't help that it released barely a month before a decidedly more successful threequel - The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.
