10 Movies Ruined In Their Final Shot

Michel Franco's 2015 drama Chronic stars a brilliant Tim Roth as David, a nurse who cares for the terminally ill and, as becomes clear over the course of the film, is desperately seeking to fill a void in his own life by caring so intently for his patients.

Franco's film is a tender, sharply observed look at both end-of-life care and the destructive power of grief, though ends with a final shot that frankly feels like Franco is trolling his thoroughly invested audience.

Chronic concludes with David helping euthanise one of his patients and starting work with his new patient, a wheelchair-bound teenage boy who doesn't much care for his presence.

In the lengthy final tracking shot, we follow David as he jogs down the street, and just as he crosses the road he's suddenly hit by a car, seemingly killing him instantly. After a pregnant pause, we cut to black. The End.

It's a totally absurd, out-of-nowhere ending that feels primed entirely to shock and little else.

While Franco might be trying to deepen his examination of mortality, overall it seemed like he wasn't sure how else to end the film and opted for David's sudden, violent death as a last resort.

For those blown away by Franco's immersive character study and Roth's mesmerising performance, that final shot threw it all away.
