10 Movies So Bad Their Directors Disowned Them

3. Dune Extended Cut (David Lynch)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cg06ZBdHb5M David Lynch's notorious adaptation of Frank Herbert's classic novel Dune has had it in the ear enough over the years from audiences and critics, but also from its own director, who is best-known for his consistent and reliable blend of weirdness. Lynch originally handed in a three-hour cut of the film, but this was not to the studio's liking, who insisted that the film not run long over 2 hours. Universal decided to edit the film themselves and create a cut that fit their requirements, with producers Dino De Laurentiis and Raffaella De Laurentiis railroading Lynch in a series of creative choices, such as re-shooting scenes to make them simpler, adding narration and even excising scenes entirely. It gets worse. When the film was to be shown on TV, another cut was assembled that ran closer to Lynch's run-time, but it was not edited at all in the fashion Lynch required, and so was simply another case of the studio intervening for no good reason. Lynch's version is replaced with the Alan Smithee credit in this version, and also in some variants of the previous edit.
