10 Movies That Did Star Trek Better Than Star Trek
7. Oblivion
What it gets right: Humanistic space travel At first blush, this Tom Cruise sci-fi flick from last year is everything that Star Trek isn't. In fact the Rodenberry approach is entirely at odds with the current trend for apocalyptic fiction about the future, whether near or far flung, where the assumption is always that humanity is gonna mess things up at some point and left in a horrible, lethal dystopia. Star Trek was always an antidote to that, a entirely optimistic work about how things could only get better, that being in control of our own destiny as a species meant we would go from strength to strength, rather than eventually destroy ourselves. That's the deal in everything from World War Z to Wall-E. It's also the set up of Oblivion, in which the world's been abandoned after we rather unwisely detonated a bunch of nuclear weapons to see off some alien invaders. Cruise plays Jack Harper, one of the few remaining humans on Earth, alongside partner Andrea Riseborough. Besides a bunch of familiar twists, turns and double crosses along the way, Oblivion is really about humanity triumphing over adversity, with a bunch of science fiction junk happening in the background. Oh and the sleek design of the technology and outfits is very Star Trek, too.
