10 Movies That Did Star Trek Better Than Star Trek

What it gets right: A multicultural crew with a heroic mission Danny Boyle's follow up to 28 Days Later tends to get forgotten a bit in the midst of his totally-not-zombies classic, his Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire and something called the London Olympics Opening Ceremony (that's not on his IMDb but apparently it's a big deal). It really shouldn't though because, arguments about the third act going a bit slasher film, it's a really solid piece of modern, optimistic science fiction with some reasonably steady grounding in actual science, and one of the most accomplished and pleasingly diverse casts in a recent Hollywood film. Cillian Murphy leads front and centre but he's joined by Michelle Yeoh, Chris Evans, Benedict Wong and Rose Byrne, with the multiculturalism explained by the nature of the crew's mission. The Icarus II is a global endeavour, the warring countries of the world putting aside their petty differences in order to address a larger threat: the impeding collapse of our sun, which would expunge all life in the solar system. It's not quite the enlightened society of Star Trek but it certainly puts some stock in the idea that mankind can work together when it's necessary, and achieve great things when we do so. Now imagine Shatner saying that speech.
