10 Movies That Did Star Trek Better Than Star Trek
5. Guardians Of The Galaxy
What it gets right: Almost everything Hopefully it isn't too early to call it, but we really did enjoy the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite some initial reservations. After all, we'd seen that the studio could effectively translate its existing roster of superhero characters into the sort of blockbuster action films that eat up time and pocket money in the summer holidays, but could they do the same thing with a sci-fi film? Turns out that yes, yes they can, and they can do it very well too. The reference points for Guardians Of The Galaxy may have stretched further back to WWII films like The Dirty Dozen and spaghetti Westerns, but there's a definite Star Trek vibe amongst it, too. The stars of the film might be a bunch of outlaws, the scum and villainy of the universe forced into doing something heroic, which has something more in common with that other big space opera franchise. And admittedly, they achieve most of their goals by shooting things, blowing them up or flying great ruddy spaceships into them, which is the polar opposite of the Starfleet approach to cosmic democracy. But the pure, giddy thrill the film has about being in space, and the alien worlds they visit along the way, is straight out of the star-gazing book of Rodenberry.
