10 Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says
1. The Dark Knight Rises
2012 saw two highly anticipated films that, despite being released to critical plaudits and big box office hauls, were totally savaged by the fans. The first was Prometheus, a film ruined only by its spoilerific advertising campaign leaving nothing exciting for fans to experience. The second was The Dark Knight Rises whose barrage of fan dislike makes even less sense.
Christopher Nolan faced a hard job in returning to his Batman series; The Dark Knight had become the undisputed high-point of the superhero genre and Heath Ledger's Joker had left a legacy no villain would be able to match. So he went in completely the other direction. Taking inspiration from the celebrated Knightfall and less-celebrated No Man's Land comic arcs, the film pushed further than the previous two, taking place on a much larger scale with a wider cast of characters, although never losing sight of what made the reboot work so well in the first place.
It's a perfect trilogy ender, tying up the threads that had surreptitiously been left hanging in the previous films, but it also stood on its own right; although much of Bane's motivation is heavily implied by his association with the League of Shadows, it's not enough to confuse what newcomers there were. There's the occasional logic gap, but they're gleefully swept into the bat cave in favour of the epic story.
Complaints tend to range from the petty (Bane working for Talia allegedly ruins his character) to the inane (Batman's not in it as much as people wanted), which only serves to make criticisms of this awesome movie all the more perplexing. Is The Dark Knight Rises as good as The Dark Knight? No. Does it come close? Yes.
