10 Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says

10. Waterworld

Universal Pictures

Even before Waterworld entered cinemas in the summer of 1995 it was already a box office flop. Following a troubled production that saw star Kevin Costner take the reigns from original director Kevin Reynolds, the budget had spiralled so high that to simply break even the film would have to do business matching Jurassic Park, at the time the highest grossing film ever.

And thanks to the industry press delighting in such a high profile disaster, in the months leading up to release everyone knew it. As with The Lone Ranger it was impossible for a critic to review the film or an audience member to buy a ticket without knowing just how bad things had gone behind the scenes. It didn't matter what the film was like; it would go down in history as a stinker.

Waterworld under-performed for sure, but that wasn't really down to the quality of the finished product. While the story may be a bit sluggish at points, it's impressive filmmaking on a properly large scale; the effects are pretty damn good, it's massive sets and model-work feeling surprisingly fresh when watched from a CGI saturated view-point. It may have started Costner's descent, but, unlike The Postman which followed, it wasn't a total mess.
