10 Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says
8. Hercules
Brett Ratner doesn't have the best track-record in general and it's only more true when he's working with an existing idea. Red Dragon lost the bite of The Silence Of The Lambs and his run in the X-Men is so poorly regarded it's now been written out of existence. He couldn't even make sequels to his own Rush Hour work.
So naturally expectations for Hercules, based off comic book Hercules: The Thracian Wars, itself inspired by the greek legend, were pretty low. Well isn't it nice to be surprised. Feeling like a good, old-fashioned B-Movie, the film sets itself a reachable bar of average quality and hits it. It's not going to be remembered as a summer highlight in years to come, but as a Friday night flick it's a hell of a lot of fun.
The origin story, normally the main plot of a graphic novel adaptation, is joked over in the first minutes, making way for a plot that is more than just the hero's journey. That sort of thing sounds basic, but it's sorely lacking in modern blockbusters. The Rock continues to be watchable as the purported demi-God, reminding us of why he's made the move into acting so successfully. Well done Brett.
