10 Movies That Aren’t As Bad As Everyone Says
7. Cars
Its reputation has certainly been brought down thanks to the sequel, but even before then Cars was treated as the black sheep of the Pixar flock. And while it's certainly not up there with the likes of Up or Toy Story, the film offers enough to make it worthy of the animation studio.
The main complaint tends to be aimed at the logic of the Cars world; who made them and why do they exist? Of course it's fun to nit pick, but until you can explain why toys can come to life, or how monsters created teleports to a parallel universe it doesn't really work as a movie-destroying criticism. Many people were predisposed to dislike the film, finding the concept all too childish. That may be true to a degree, but amongst the merchandising prospects there's the mature, if well trodden, story of someone taking a look at their life and asking themselves what they really want.
It's often overlooked how emotionally satisfying the film's tying together of the two plots together is, with the eventual outcome (Lightning McQueen striking a balance between his racing job and relaxing Radiator Springs lifestyle) being a damn sight more balanced than Planes' sickening idealisticness. But on a more fundamental level there're smart jokes (particularly visual ones) and great animation.
It's no Wall-E, but it stands above most attempts from other major animation studios.
