10 Movies That Broke Promises To Fans

8. There Will Be LGBTQ Representation - Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker

One of the most infuriating trends in Hollywood as of late is the tendency for blockbuster films, especially those produced by Disney, to "queerbait" LGBTQ audiences hoping to see themselves represented on-screen.

All too often have tentpole filmmakers talked-up how well the LGBTQ community is represented in their films, only for said representation to equate to nothing more than vague innuendo or a brief single shot which can be edited out to placate intolerant foreign markets.

The most frustrating recent example is Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which ahead of its release was said to feature the first ever gay kiss in the series' history, all while writer-director J.J. Abrams praised the film's inclusiveness.

This got the LGBTQ community talking about the movie only to be disappointed when, inevitably, the kiss amounted to nothing more than a two-second smooch between two totally insignificant characters, in the middle of a crowded frame no less.

All it says to LGBTQ viewers is that their representation matters less than that sweet, sweet bigoted box office abroad.

Though early word suggests Marvel's The Eternals will feature an outwardly gay character, you'd be foolish to expect anything more than a shot or two that can be easily cleaved away for China and beyond.
