If a horror movie ever dubs itself "The Final Chapter," you should absolutely take the claim with a truckload of salt, because it's almost never true.

From Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare to Omen III: The Final Conflict, and The Final Destination, it's usually nothing more than a cheap marketing ploy to drum up flagging box office revenue.

Hell, the Friday the 13th franchise was cheeky enough to try it twice with the fourth film, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, and the ninth, Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday.

But the most amusing recent example is Saw 3D: The Final Chapter, the seventh and purportedly last entry into the hit horror franchise, which promised to tie off all the loose ends and bring Jigsaw's (Tobin Bell) legacy to a satisfying close.

And while the film certainly gave the series a suitably circuitous ending, it also left the door open for more, and so few were surprised when an eighth film, Jigsaw, was released in 2017.

With a ninth film, Spiral, due for release later this year, it's clear that Saw isn't going anywhere as long as its branding remains recognisable and profitable.

Obviously, the cynical combination of a desperation-fuelled 3D release and "The Final Chapter" subtitle paid off, as the seventh Saw film was one of the franchise's most commercially successful to date.
