2005's dramedy fantasy Nanny McPhee was based on Christianna Brand's three Nurse Matilda books, yet the filmmakers opted to rename the film adaptation to Nanny McPhee for fear of confusing family audiences.

The feeling was that potential customers risked mistaking the film for Roald Dahl's Matilda - namely the 1996 Danny DeVito-directed adaptation - if it was named Nurse Matilda, and so decided to give the story a wholly new title, in turn renaming the main character.

Additionally, the word "nurse" was cut from the title due to modern audiences typically only associating nurses with the medical field rather than childcare.

The change certainly didn't harm the film's success, as Nanny McPhee went on to gross $123.3 million against a mere $25 million budget, resulting in a 2010 sequel, Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, being produced.
