2. The Birth Of A Nation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sts-11p8Ry4 D.W. Griffith's infamous film is about the war of two families, the Southern Camerons and the Northern Stonemans, during the American Civil War, but leaps off to cover much more than that. A famous scene depicts the Camerons being assailed by a gang of black soldiers, before the Ku Klux Klan shows up and saves the day. The combination of frantic editing and use of Wagner allowed the film to inspire many to join the Klan, when it had been in danger of flat-out disbanding just a few decades earlier. Five years following the film's release, the Klan's membership numbered around 4 million, and though not a direct consequence of the film, you can bet the film had a sure say in it. Though most of these films changed the world for the better, here is one work of racist social activism that we as cineastes should be ashamed of, even if it's undeniable that the document is fascinating to watch.
