10 Movies That Cost Twice As Much As They Needed To

As technology advances, feature-length animation invariably tends to get more expensive. To put things into perspective, the first Toy Story cost a thrifty $30m, but last year's fourth installment that focused on virtually the exact same cast of characters ran up an eye-watering $200m budget.

That being said, it still seems incomprehensible that Tangled set Disney back $260m, and a decade later it still remains the most expensive animated movie ever made by some distance, and the twelfth costliest production in the history of the industry.

It was a box office success and scored solid reviews, but the tortured production process saw costs spiral to an alarming degree. For the cost of one Tangled you could have made one-and-a-half Frozens, four Shreks or three Toy Story 2s, and all of them at least had the benefit of sequels to keep the money rolling in.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
