But then, of course, Wedge Antilles was Poe Dameron before Poe Dameron was Poe Dameron.

Actor Denis Lawson reportedly turned down a minor role as Wedge Antilles, hero pilot of the Rebel Alliance, because he believes it might well have bored him. That's fair enough: he might be right, and the man’s sixty-eight now, so you can appreciate him deciding that he should get the last say in how he spends his time now.

However, in the intervening years since Return Of The Jedi, Wedge Antilles - hero of the Rebel Alliance, one of only a few people to have survived both attacks on the Death Star - has built up quite a following.

He appeared in all three original movies, and saved Luke Skywalker from being turned into ketchup in the dogfights surrounding the first Death Star. He flew an X-Wing into the core of the second, bigger Death Star alongside the Millennium Falcon. The man’s a dude!

Obviously a film that fills in some of his post-Jedi, pre-Awakens story would need to be recast as a matter of course, but he’s a war hero, an ace pilot and a charismatic motherf*cker. This one’s a no-brainer.
