10 Movies That Created Endless Memes

1. The Dark Knight / The Dark Knight Rises

The litany of masterful one-liners and set pieces carried off by Heath Ledger's take on the character in The Dark Knight instantly provided endless avenues of memeable inspiration. "Everybody loses their minds" and "Why so serious?" swiftly became fodder for online creators and are both still in use to this day, although they have fallen out of fashion as meme trends have changed.

2012's conclusive installment The Dark Knight Rises didn't provide as many sources of inspiration as its predecessor but is responsible for one of the more enduring superhero movie-based memes. "You merely adopted the darkness" - uttered by Tom Hardy's Bane as Batman attempts to use the lack of light to his advantage during a brutal brawl between the pair - typically replaces the word "darkness" with the most appropriate term, symbolizing one's intimate familiarity with a situation or concept.

Nolan's version of Bane is responsible for further notable memes - with Tom Hardy's voice proving to be an endless well to mine for jokes - but "Darkness" remains his most significant contribution.
