10 Movies That Definitely "Influenced" The Hunger Games

9. Gamer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ECoPbiGfjNw Dystopian Future: Sort Of Reality TV Aspects: Sort Of Battle Arena: Yes Captive Fighters: Yes Children As Fighters: No The actual gamers amongst you are likely gritting your teeth upon seeing this entry, as Gamer has something of a reputation for casting a negative light on the hobby based on the rather stereotypical way it looks at gamers. Still, the film does have enough similarities to The Hunger Games to warrant a mention on the list. Gamer is set in 2024, where a game named Slayer has been developed that lets players take control of a Death Row inmate in a battle to the death against other inmates. The reward for survival is another battle, unless the inmate manages to survive 30 times, after which they will be set free. The key similarity here is that the participants in the game are captives in much the same way as the various lower-class citizens in The Hunger Games. However, in this case the participants are not under their own control until main character Tillman manages to exercise his own free will. He then uses this to escape and attempts to overthrow the constructs of the game world. Objectively, Gamer may well be the worst film on this list - being fairly clumsily executed - but it is still worth a look for anybody who enjoys the arena battle aspects of The Hunger Games above all else.
