10 Movies That End In Utter Silence
10. Paranormal Activity
The Paranormal Activity franchise is largely defined by silence: the low-budget found footage films have built an empire out of stillness and quiet, largely leaving the audience to populate their own minds with the true horror.
This typically carries through to the ending of each movie, which is characteristically a creepy jump-scare tease for the next inevitable sequel.
The first four movies in the series all ended with a title card explaining that the central mystery was still unsolved, while the credits eerily played out with no accompanying sound whatsoever.
It certainly enhanced the feeling that what we were seeing was truly found footage rather than a movie that would have an actual musical score, though the 2014 spin-off The Marked Ones eventually dispensed with tradition by including a subtle ambient score alongside its credits roll.
Despite how utterly predictable and formulaic most of the Paranormal Activity sequels were, the silent credits was an effective technique for leaving the audience firmly outside of their comfort zone as they exited the cinema.
