10 Movies That Gave Away The Spoiler Immediately

5. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

Shaun of the Dead
Warner Bros.

Guillermo del Toro found his first serious dose of Spanish-language mainstream success with dark indie horror Pan's Labyrinth. It garnered greater attention than del Toro's usual work thanks to his adaptation of Hellboy two years earlier, and went on to win three Academy Awards and widespread critical acclaim.

Set against the political turmoil of Franco's Spain, the film opens with its protagonist, Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), lying dying with blood running from her nose, before the camera spirals into her eye and the film's narration begins. It spins a fairy tale of how a princess, whose father is the king of the underworld, visits the human world and loses her memory, before becoming mortal and dying without finding her way home. Believing she will one day return, the king builds labyrinths around the world, which act as portals.

While not a play by play retelling of the film, it nonetheless gives away the most significant plot details at the very beginning, of Ofelia's death and the narrative weight of the labyrinth by her monstrous stepfather's house. The film ends where it began, the camera's spiral matching the plot's circularity, accompanied by narration suggesting the girl's return to a happier place.
