10 Movies That Gave Just The Right Amount Of Backstory

9. Fight Club

V For Vendetta
Fox

Some entries don’t need an extensive explanation. Fight Club shows us a sleep deprived protagonist without objective. He searches for meaning in various ways but because we’re painfully aware of his insomnia, the outer layer of the narrative is always blurred. We all know the twists, turns and hidden clues of the film but the story told behind the violence and the paranoia is what always excited me as a viewer.

How did all of it happen, what occurred between the time jumps, what happens after Tyler comes to terms with the terrorist schemes he’d unintentionally created? A backstory doesn’t just have to be what happened before the film, it can also be the during.

In fact, the reason why Fight Club makes our list is because one of the rarer executions of a great backstory is the in between. The sequences throughout the very film we’re watching that aren’t shown to us. We know the ending, but we don’t know how exactly the characters got there, even after watching and rewatching the film closely.
