10 Movies That Gave Just The Right Amount Of Backstory

5. Guardians Of The Galaxy

V For Vendetta
Marvel Studios

Guardians of the Galaxy, an ensemble film based around space rogues, a raccoon and a talking tree, took what The Avengers did and added its own twist. The Guardians aren’t your regular loveable heroes, they’re off kilter and rather disjointed as a team. But that’s part of the fun of an ensemble cast, mixing and matching, balancing the team for all its worth.

The other fun part is introducing these A-holes to the audience. Who’s to be deemed the leader, is there a love interest, a brute or a genius? All of those questions are answered and that’s part of why Guardians of the Galaxy offers such a well showcased backstory.

Alright, they have been featured in hundreds of comic books but that’s beside the point. The film assumes you know nothing of these heroes and their origins, and by the end makes us care for the whole team. We saw Quill’s relationship with his mother and a love of music, mentions of Drax’s family and ties to Thanos who, alongside his daughters, also get screen time.

Just because we’re familiar doesn’t mean we know everything, though. We’re told almost nothing about Rocket, or Groot. In fact, even to this day we’re left to figure out what tragic life the little raccoon had previously.
