10 Movies That Just Tried Way Too Hard

10. Crash (2004)

Crash Crash has gone down in history as one of the worst Best Picture winners in Oscar history, because... well, who's still talking about Crash these days? I suppose its status as a non-talking point justifies its existence as an unworthy winner better than the actual reasons as to why this movie deserves to be forgotten, although - trust me - there are actual reasons. The main one of which involves - would you believe? - trying too hard. Here's a flick that encompasses so many traits associated with a filmmaker attempting to bait the Oscar votes, it's almost nauseating. That's to say, Paul Haggis' urban tale built on interconnecting stories (a certified "trying too hard" trait if ever there was one) reeks of obnoxiousness - Crash is the very definition of a movie that shoots for glory and comes up short. Why? The execution is so darn self-important, and so implausibly melodramatic, that you begin to feel like you've paid to watch Haggis stand on a soapbox. You can admire it in places, but ultimately Crash feels too calculated to resonate: the experience is akin to being told off by a teacher... 20 years after graduation.
