10 Movies That Made Actors QUIT Forever

8. Shelley Duvall - The Shining (1980)

Stanley Kubrick's treatment of Shelley Duvall on the set of the 1980 horror The Shining has slipped into movie legend since the film's release.

Behind the camera, Kubrick was a methodical, obsessed director who was constantly insistent on getting the best shot possible. And in order to get the best shot possible, he needed the best actors possible.

Whilst the director's unorthodox approach seemed to rub off on Jack Nicholson's intense performance, it didn't work quite as well for Duvall.

Between takes, Kubrick would terrorise the actress, calling her performance terrible and telling her she had no talent. For the infamous staircase scene, Kubrick took 127 takes of the same footage, leading Duvall to become dehydrated and blistered all over her hands. It's also said that she started losing hair because of the stress she was under.

In the end, the film was a rousing success, but Duvall would later tell film critic Roger Ebert that the whole experience was "unbearable." She released a handful of movies between The Shining and her official retirement in 2002, but because of her experiences making the horror flick she became less and less interested in her career.
