10 Movies That Made New York City Look Like The Worst Place In The World

10. Cloverfield (2008)

A dizzying mash-up between the found-footage and monster-movie genre, Cloverfield puts a bit of refreshing spin on "disaster in New York"; releasing a creature on the city that for once isn't a giant monkey or dinosaur. Even the damage done to New York in Cloverfield is inventive, with the Statue Of Liberty quickly decapitated within half an hour of running time, and having her head merrily bowled down the city streets. New York City is the absolute last place you want to be if anything like the carnage in Cloverfield kicks off in real life. There is an additional dose of fear injected here as the thing that attacks The Big Apple is never explained or understood, and after just a few minutes the entire city is immersed in terror as the monster brushes off bullets and knocks down skyscrapers. Whilst Cloverfield is a pretty intimidating movie in itself, it's the sickening images of 9/11 that the movie alludes to that really get the blood pumping. This merged sense of terror and confusion at something unknown attacking the city replicates the instant reaction of America when the World Trade Center were hit over 13 years ago. Many of the first pictures of 9/11 came from footage filmed by the public, and director Matt Reeve's chosen style of the "queasy-cam" acts as a reminder of those initial images.
