10 Movies That Made Subtle Character Changes At The Last Minute
7. Winston Deavor Was Made More Earnest - Incredibles 2
Incredibles 2 underwent extensive changes throughout production as Pixar reworked the story, as is a major benefit of the animated medium where costly reshoots aren't necessary - just the blood, sweat, and tears of an army of animators.
Though Pixar made major changes to the film's antagonist, Evelyn Deavor (Catherine Keener), changing the character from a man to a woman after realising it'd give her a more interesting dynamic with Helen Parr aka Elastigirl (Holly Hunter), they were a little more slight with their tweaks to her brother, Winston Deavor (Bob Odenkirk).
While our introduction to Winston suggests to viewers that he might not actually have the Incredibles' best intentions in mind, he does in fact turn out to be a genuinely good-hearted fan who wants to bring superheroes back into the limelight.
Even so, Winston received some slight alterations during production, his character being rewritten to be more earnest and wholly innocent, rather than a more ambiguously intentioned character in the original script. Voice actor Bob Odenkirk said:
"I feel like the character became more innocent the more Brad [Bird] rewrote the script… Brad evolved the story in some pretty important ways while we were doing the recording sessions that I did over the last year. He became more substantially positive and upbeat, and I love that about him."
Winston's unabashed love of superheroes, free of any sinister motives, was one of the film's most pleasant surprises and most certainly a smart change.
