10 Movies That Made Subtle Character Changes At The Last Minute
5. Bane's Voice Was Redubbed To Be More Coherent - The Dark Knight Rises
Christopher Nolan sure does love his "impressionistic" sound mixes, as evidenced no better - or more frustratingly - than in his most recent film Tenet, where realistic environmental sounds often drowned out spoken dialogue.
Nolan first received blowback for this technique during production of The Dark Knight Rises, as when the film's IMAX prologue sequence was released in front of Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, many complained that they couldn't understand a word Bane (Tom Hardy) was saying.
Though Nolan initially denied he would be fixing the scene to be more decipherable, the final theatrical version is infinitely clearer, due to the dialogue being both re-dubbed and remixed in various places.
Hardy's new delivery has a more musical tenor to it which lends Bane a darkly comedic, playful quality compared to his more straight-up menacing tone in the IMAX prologue.
It may have done nothing to alter the character's arc throughout the film, but no doubt had an effect on how audiences ultimately came to perceive him. Check out the comparison for yourself below:
