10 Movies That Made Subtle Retcons They Hoped You Wouldn't Notice
5. Pennywise Terrorises The Losers In Summer 1989 - It Chapter Two
Though the entire premise of It Chapter Two is that it leaps forward 27 years from the events of the first film, director Andy Muschietti knew it'd be a colossal waste not to write new material for the widely-praised young cast who played the Losers in Chapter One.
This ultimately resulted in Chapter Two featuring extensive flashbacks which expanded and embellished the Losers' breakup in the summer of 1989, where after unsuccessfully battling Pennywise (Bill SkarsgÄrd) they temporarily went their separate ways.
The first film makes this break seem relatively short and trivial, but Chapter Two's flashbacks explain that each of the Losers was separately terrorised by Pennywise over the course of the summer.
Though it doesn't break the story, it does stretch credibility somewhat, given that Muschietti has clearly attempted to milk both Pennywise and the younger Losers for every drop they're worth after the shock success of the 2017 film.
But Chapter Two was met with decidedly more mixed reviews than its predecessor, many decrying its over-indulgent 170-minute runtime above all else.
