10 Movies That Made You Most Question Your Own Reality

4. The Matrix (1999)

Think you've got it bad Truman? Just a year after he discovered his entire life was a TV show, Neo realised that most of humanity had become imprisoned in a simulated reality called 'the Matrix', where sentient machines use people's body heat and electrical activity as a source of electricity. It's not all bad though; Neo joined the rebellion and developed some kick ass super powers that turned him into a live action anime hero. Although the power of the original film has been diminished somewhat by two inferior sequels, The Matrix helped popularize the age old philosophical question, "How can we trust what we perceive to be real?" It was by no means the first movie to ask such a question, but it had a huge impact on pop culture, leaving some still doubtful about the certainty of reality. Whether we are imprisoned in a simulated reality or not, there's not a lot we can do it about it, so I say run outside and grab some ice cream. Trust me. It's the best.
