10 Movies That Massively Over-Performed At The Box Office
5. The Intouchables
Remember the shmaltzy French dramedy that out-performed Django Unchained, Prometheus, Taken 2 and Titanic 3D at the box office in 2012?
While the movie only earned a little over $10m in the United States, it caught on in a big way with international audiences with 97.6% of the box office haul coming from overseas markets. The kind of big-hearted, crowd-pleasing, heartstring-tugging and cliche-ridden feelgood hit that Hollywood does so well, it is almost ironic that the English-language remake remains stuck in development hell.
The only bigger surprise than The Intouchables coming out of nowhere to earn $444.8m worldwide is that Hollywood failed to capitalize on the hype right away, with the American version suffering several false starts over the years. Even with Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart signed on as leads, it seems unlikely that the remake will ever make it to the big screen given that The Weinstein Company were the project's primary backers.
