10 Movies That Mock You For Paying Attention

1. Fight Club

Tyler Durden Fight Club
20th Century Fox

Probably the most infamous example on this list, David Fincher's satirical masterpiece Fight Club is a film which could not have more disrespect for its own viewers.

It's a big part of the blackly comic film's charm as Tyler Durden and the nameless narrator's descent into madness constantly flips a middle finger at audience members expecting a self-serious adaptation of Chuck Palanuik's novel of the same name. Just look at Tyler's laughing dismissal of "flashback humour" late in the film, or the many moments where characters look straight into the camera.

The most infamous instance of this film mocking the viewer for paying attention, however, doesn't even come in the film proper.

Instead, viewers had to wait until the film's DVD release to see the FBI anti-piracy warning before the film. For viewers who freeze frame to read such things it's not the usual legal language they are met with, but rather a bracing tirade courtesy of the film's anti-villain himself:

"If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second of your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all who claim it? Do you read everything you're supposed to read?"
