10 Movies That Pissed Off Audiences Right Away

1. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

Though Paul W.S. Anderson's 1995 Mortal Kombat adaptation wasn't a great movie, it was a lot of fun, and arguably one of the most tonally faithful video game movies to date (the lack of gore notwithstanding).

The film's stonking box office success saw New Line Cinema rush a sequel into production, with both Anderson and several key cast members absent, while the original's cinematographer, John R. Leonetti, assumed directorial duties. Oof.

The film as a whole is an unintentionally comical trainwreck, but its biggest sin is one which actively annoyed most of the fanbase - killing off Johnny Cage (Chris Conrad) in the first five minutes at the hands of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn (Brian Thompson).

Given that Cage is one of Mortal Kombat's most popular and iconic characters - second only, perhaps, to Liu Kang - it was a majorly bone-headed move to pointlessly off him at the start of the film.

Though Linden Ashby, who played Cage in the first film, opted not to return after reading the script, the sheer fact that they'd already re-cast the part with Chris Conrad was surely reason enough to keep him around for longer than a mere cameo.

Cage's limp demise left a deathly sour taste in fans' mouths and, well, the rest of the movie did nothing to remedy that.
